Since poor Sunggyu always gets the short end of the stick, here's a small celebration of all the things we loved about Grandpa Gyu:
1. His eyes (or lack thereof)
In This is INFINITE, Sunggyu had the most problems being recognized in public (L was naturally the most recognizable), which begs the question: how can the public fail to recognize that charming squint?
2. His grudges
If you wrong Leader Gyu, he will remember (and glare with those aforementioned eyes). The group's manager picked it out as one of his worst traits, but I think there's something a little bit endearing to it. After all, since he always has the "no one appreciates me" mindset, it's kind of sweet how he seems extra moved when someone does. When L picked "41 Days" as one of his favorite songs, you could tell he was positively beaming on the inside.
I was honestly pleasantly surprised the first time I heard him sing. After hearing his speaking voice (defensive and ticked off the most time thanks to the members teasing him kekeke), I was not expecting that sublime gorgeousness to come out of his mouth. If you haven't heard his solo album Another Me, pick it up. He's the main vocal for a reason.
Part of Sunggyu's assignment to tame his pettiness was to have his members boss him around, which led them to force him to engage in a whole bunch of embarrassing situations out in public. One of them was a butt wiggle dance while asking "why is my butt so sexy?" Good question, Sunggyu, good question.
Fun fact: Butt mania Dongwoo ranked Sunggyu's tush as the worst in INFINITE's (Sungjong's was the best), but This is INFINITE probably gave fans a pretty good argument in favor of it.
In spite of all the jokes, the love is still there. As leader, he looks after his members well, even though he often gets put into the shadows because of L serving as the center member thanks to his visuals. And no matter how often the members tease him, they really do look up to him as their leader, and probably love his solo work as much as we fangirls do. INFINITE has a great time bringing the laughs for their varieties, but at the end of the day, they're a family... and Sunggyu makes a pretty darn good Grandpa leader for his team.
